Geography
Situated on the southern tip of the African continent, South Africa has the warm water of the Indian Ocean to the south and east, and the cold Atlantic to the west. The coastal belt, with endless beaches and indigenous forests, is separated from the interior by a dramatic range of mountains. The western interior is monopolised by the Karoo desert, which stretches to the Namibia border. Grasslands and savannah stretch eastwards to the Kruger National Park, which runs the length of the border with Mozambique and north to the borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Access
There are three major international airports, Johannesburg (JNB), Durban (DUR)and Cape Town (CPT). Scheduled flights are operated between these and the many smaller ones. Port Elizabeth (PLZ) and George (GRJ) service the Garden Route, Hazyview (KMIA) and Hoedspruit (HDS) service the Greater Kruger Park area, and Richards Bay (RCB) services the Zululand region. |
Time to Travel
There is no time when South Africa needs to be avoided. The Cape coastal belt receives its rain during winter, from April through to August. The interior is a summer rainfall area, with afternoon thundershowers being common during December to March. Game viewing is at its easiest during the dry hot months of October to December. Whales can be seen in the Cape waters during the latter half of the year and the floral kingdom is at its best during August, September and October.
