KENYA

This is the legendary country that inspired Karen Blixen to write Out of Africa. Its wildlife has been immortalised in Born Free, The Ghost and the Darkness and many more Hollywood epics. The coastal resorts, once the playground of Hemmingway, still boasts of the best fishing grounds in the world. The magic of Kenya remains today.

Access
Longhaul flights access via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Nairobi, while most domestic flights use nearby Wilson Airport. The coastal resorts are accessed via Mombasa (MBA). SAA & Kenya Airways fly daily from Johannesburg to Nairobi, while Kenya Airways has a Sunday direct flight into Mombasa from Johannesburg.

Time to Travel
The rainy season of April/May is best avoided. Otherwise, travel is pleasant all year round. The famed migration normally arrives into the Masai Mara region in late July and departs around October. If you are intent on viewing this phenomenon, then August/September are the peak months - so book at least 6 months in advance to avoid disappointment.

Geography
Kenya is a country on the eastern coast of Africa, right on the equator. It is a land of striking landscapes, ranging from snowcapped Mount Kenya to rich farmlands, barren deserts and tropical forests. In the east its border is the warm Indian Ocean, with a multitude of luxurious beach resorts. Access to the southern beaches is via Mombasa and to the central beaches is via Malindi. These waters are famed fishing grounds and also offer excellent scuba diving. In the south, Kenya borders on Tanzania with Mt Kilimanjaro being a famous landmark, as well as the Masai Mara. The northern region is dry and arid, while the west is characterised by the lush Great Rift Valley with its many lakes. Almost one third of Kenya is under wildlife management.
