BOTSWANA

The Okavango River bursts upon the dry Kalahari sands of northern Botswana in an annual flood. From a wide winding river it spreads gently towards Maun, through tiny channels, before disappearing into the thirstland. The floodwaters link a succession of ever-changing lagoons, islands, grasslands and flooded plains in a mosaic of land and water. The Okavango Delta safari is the ultimate african safari trip. Highlights of a Botswana vacation include fishing on the Chobe River and a mokoro trail in the Moremi Game Reserve.

Geography
Landlocked, Botswana has South Africa as its southern border and Namibia to the west and north. Ngamiland, in the north, is characterised by the unique Okavango Delta. Further south, specially adapted animals survive in the Kalahari desert, while the Chobe River in the north attracts huge herds of elephants. This is a dry arid country with warm, dry winters and hot summers. The Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe lie to the east and can be easily combined in an itinerary.

Time to Travel
Some of the Okavango lodges close for Jan/Feb and March for rest and renovation. This is the wet season, but travel is not unduly discouraged. If you are mot afraid of the rain it is a lovely time to visit. The remainder of the year is fine, with Nov/ Dec being very hot. The peak tourist season is Aug/Sept, with much higher prices. Game viewing is much better in the dry, hot
season.

Suggested Itineraries

We suggest you visit a water camp. It is the waterways that make the Okavango unique. Some water camps do have game, but not all. Ideally, spend a few nights at a water camp and a few at a game camp. If you have time to spare, include the Linyanti, Chobe or desert regions. We tailor-make itineraries to suit your needs.
