Zimbabwe has a lot more to offer than the brutal force and volume that is the Victoria Falls. This is a country with a recorded history of tens of thousands of years, where legends of Arab traders, English explorers and Zulu warlords collided with the wildlife of Hwange and Gonarezhou. It is now a country that boasts a sound and well-experienced infrastructure, and a variety of tourist attractions that include mountains, rivers and lakes.
Zimbabwe is situated on the southern tip of the African continent, to the north of South Africa. The spectacular Eastern Highlands borders on Mozambique with crisp mountain air that is ideal for trout fishing and has vistas stretching all the way to the coast. The drier western side borders on Botswana and includes the Matobo Hills and Bulawayo, the oldest and most historic of Zimbabwe’s towns. One of Africa’s greatest rivers, the Zambezi, forms the northern border with Zambia. It is a tourist attraction along its entire length, which includes the world’s wildest one-day white water rafting, Lake Kariba and the Mana Pools. With the exception of the plantations and forests in the east, Zimbabwe is predominantly covered by woodland.
Time to travel
There is no time when Zimbabwe needs to be avoided. It is a summer rainfall area, with afternoon thundershowers being common during December to March. Game viewing is at its easiest during the dry hot months of October to December, when temperatures often exceed 30 degrees C. It is seldom that temperatures fall below freezing in winter (May – August), which is characterised by cool nights and warm clear days. The Victoria Falls is at its fullest in the first half of the year and the flow is much reduced during the last half, when rafting is at its wildest.
